Help Haiti! Read Here

The photos are shocking, the video heartbreaking, the pleas for help gut-wrenching. The devastation in Haiti has captured the attention of our nation, and more importantly, the world. The positive that has come out of this tragedy has been watching the world respond to the calls for help.
In the first 48 hours since the earthquake hit, The Red Cross received $35 million dollars in donations! What’s been really interesting is that $5 million dollars of that total was raised through text donations. We are definitely living in an new tech age, and it’s been refreshing to see people using this technology to do some good. In addition to the Red Cross effort to raise money through text messages, Wyclef Jean is doing the same through his Yele Foundation. In one day, he raised $1 million dollars!
If you haven’t had the chance to do so, please consider giving through text. I’m sure there’s something that you can give up today that you would have otherwise spent $5 or $10 dollars on. Is it that latte, cheeseburger, makeup, or music? Take one day to give that up and donate it to the efforts in Haiti. And before you ask…yes, I have done it myself, more than once, through both organizations.
To donate to the Red Cross, text Haiti to 90999. To donate through Wyclef’s Yele organization, text Yele to 501501.

My children and I are so frustrated watching all the earthquake news about Haiti recently. It is difficult to sit on our hands and not be able to make a real difference. All that we can think of is to donate to our favorite charitable organization so that we can at least provide some help.

I wish more people were like Mr. George Clooney. What he has done to help the Haitian people is just amazing. So many of the Hollywood celebrities are just phonies looking for publicity. George is one of the true greats.

The government is to blame, though, just not in the way that you think. Property rights in Haiti are nearly non-existent, which makes it impossible for anyone to own a business, and create enough capital to build anything more complicated than an a-frame shack. The actions of the Haitian government, and governments around the world, have practically guaranteed the continued poverty of Haiti.
